The Big Snit is an Oscar nominated NFB animated film by Richard Condie from 1985 that takes an interesting approach to the topic of nuclear war breaking out in the middle of a domestic dispute over a game of Scrabble.

“Why are you always shaking your eyes?!” he asks, when she complains that he saws too much, after watching his favourite show “Sawing For Teens”. He reduces her to tears and then remembers the good times, and they make up.

The poor cat, who gets into trouble along the way, has had enough and wants out. As the door is opened to let him go, the nuclear chaos from outside creates a wave of peace over them and so they decide it would be nice to finish the game. That is The Big Snit. Classic Canadian animation as social commentary…enjoy!

The McGarrigle Sisters “Log Driver’s Waltz” version is a classic Canada animated vignette directed by John Weldon in 1979 for the National Film Board (NFB) and based on the Canadian folk song by Wade Hemsworth of the same name.

Sung by the Mountain City Four (which included Kate and Anna McGarrigle), it is the tale of a girl who is courted by all sorts of well to-do “doctors and merchants and lawyers”, but none of them suit her tastes as much as the log driver, who dances better than any of them. This is due to his deft footwork “birling down” on logs all day long which is why, according to the song, “A log driver’s waltz pleases girls completely”.

The Log Drivers Waltz video is a much loved piece of Canadiana that was often seen on TV sets across the country for years. I hope you enjoy watching it now as much as I did many years ago!

This is a fun song from the Canadian province of Newfoundland, where the boys know how to party! This version of Aunt Martha’s Sheep is sung by Dick Nolan and I remember hearing it every Sunday afternoon when I was a kid and my Dad used to listen to a radio show called “Newfie 30″. It was a half hour of toe tappin’ accordian and fiddle music from NFLD that had lyrics you could actually listen to as if the singer was telling you a story. Great Canuck stuff it is!

This youtube music video of the tune features the parts acted out as the terrible tale unfolds of the good ol’ boys who stole poor Aunt Martha’s Sheep (played by Dolly), and the mountie who vows to catch the thieves, but gets duped into eating some Moose instead.

Yes, Alanis Morissette is a good Canadian gal, but I didn’t want to show any of her typical music videos because too many people have strong opinions about their message, and I wanted to show the lighter side of Alanis. She started off her career as a fluffy, pop singer, ya know! This girl has talent and a sense of humour too!

Is this a parody cover? Is she serious? I love the part in her “My Humps” video where she sings “you don’t want no drama” and the music gets very dramatic and emotional sounding on piano while she’s falling apart in a sobbing mess on the floor. Aww, we love you, girl! Hugs!! Fergie, eat your heart out! lol

This is what a Canadian police car chase is like in the winter. The snow and ice really slows down the high speed aspect of driving. I think the cops in Canada would be better off chasing the bad guys in a snowmobile…or maybe a tow truck! Funny video!!

The Trailer Park Boys on a TV special with all the camping gear, including lawn chairs, right on stage! Bubbles warms up the crowd with his song “Liquor and Whores” where he sings about how much he thoroughly enjoys “cigarettes and dope and mustard and baloney and liquor and whores!”. Can you picture that being sung on national tv in ANY other country? Except maybe in Amsterdam, of course…lol

This is the coolest representation of Canadian culture in a music video that I’ve ever seen! The song is The Darkest One by The Tragically Hip (one of the best Canadian bands EVER!) featuring Ricky, Julian and Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys TV show (one of the most popular Canadian TV shows ever).

The video also has a cameo by our most famous sports commentator, Don Cherry, playing the part of the chicken delivery guy. One interesting fact that most people outside Canada would miss is that the money they use to pay for the food is from old Canadian bills that we don’t use anymore. Our $1 and $2 bills were replaced with the “loonie” and “twonie” coins many years ago.

Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip not only is a cool singer, but I think he’d make a good actor as well. One bucket!! lol…great! Music and beer and good times with friends…that’s what life is all about!

One of the most popular shows in Canada is a teen drama called “Degrassi: The Next Generation” and I used to watch the original series back when it was called “The Kids Of Degrassi Street” in the 80′s. I’ve also bought gum and pop (not soda!) at the general store often shown in the original show. Ah, memories!

Anyway, a few years ago the well known director Kevin Smith brought his crew to the set of the school to film 3 episodes for season 4 with the premise of doing a movie called “Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, eh!”. The funniest part of the whole thing is this short clip of Alanis Morissette playing the principal and giving the boys a bit of a “tongue lashing”. She even wacks Jay with a hockey stick! lol
